LATER THAT SAME MOMENTEven in the barest stretch of Christmas
without twig or bulb, candied fruit or plum,
with no wreath at the door, light at the window
not even the most basic human needs
to fill the human cave or habitat, the magic
somehow makes its way across the heavens
and out of personal struggle a symbol,
not always universal, a simple icon, perhaps,
like a will-to-live metaphor gets our attention
and later that same moment, despite Christianity,
we follow it beyond desire like a star.
