THERE ARE PAUSES

There are pauses in the music

he performs on the saxophone,

spaces he leaves, notes left out.

He has seen his share

of graded heavens and hells.

He has worn the suit never cleaned

and has disengaged from his body.

He can dissolve himself

in the great delight of jazz

as food for others, a consumable

tidbit of nocturnal life.

In the spotlight not moved,

he is tempted by hell's daughters,

Anxiety, Compulsion and Depression.

On him they have the effect

of a plate of pasta commanded

by his mother "He should oughta eat".

There are pauses in the music

by which he lives unmoved,

spaces he leaves, notes left out,

so the audience can find them for him.

It's not good you should play them all.
