VOLUME 10 TABLE OF CONTENTS

The Possibility of Survival

What survives the valley between eternities?

People and lizards bear little distinction

Walking the burning endless horizon of distress.

Presided over by your common sense alone,

And exploring the dried flora, you read into

This exclusive domain of indirect nurturing

The idea that the chase itself will prove

Beyond a minor leg cramp, that ‘breaking out’

Is the desperate seed pod you wish for.

So you pray for dazzle, a puddle of light,

A shiver of sudden refreshment,

A few laughs on the house, down the road

Under a familiar corporate logo, sign of relief,

As urgent clam-bakes materialize.

You laundry-pen some pedestrian routine

Onto your postcard agenda, your movie T-shirt,

But only the optimal theme and the tentative

Way in which you make the wild scenic route

Become part of you, will set life in motion, or

Energize your delicate inner swing dance.

What is more convincing than non-belief?

What dune buggy purr of cylinders could

Make the heart revel in its own power factor?

Human fuel needs to feel the cold aspirating

Suck of brief technology before cruising

The sand painting of your relentless mind.

Out there, backed up by extremes

Whether gully flood or emerging locust,

Survival occurs inside your cactus humps.

To evoke that astringent puckering up,

Cause you to hide exuberance or the lack,

The desert will ask you personal things

But in a mystical way, through pictures

That you come upon, perhaps once, where

Only a weird part of you has even a clue.
