Remember New Year’s past at the Flood Zone, dancing to the tribal sounds of the Ululating Mummies? Begin a new tradition as Richmond’s Afro-Groove jazz ensemble, Hotel X, kicks off  2005 at the acoustically perfect art6 Gallery , promising their unique danceable, ethnic-based jazz rhythms for a new generation of dancers.

The 9-piece multicultural big band, Hotel X, has been mining the wealth of music of Africa and Latin America to create its own unique blend of jazz, influenced by the rhythms and melodies of  traditional music and contemporary composers of those regions. Their music flows from the frenzied to the hypnotic. The band has been recognized for continuing the traditions of African musical legend, Fela Kuti, alongside the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Antibalas, and Brandford
Marsalis, in the biography, Fela: The Life and Times of an African Musical Icon.

Opening the evening is a special debut performance of the reformed Rattlemouth, which grew out of the Ululating Mummies and Orthotonics in the early 90’s, and which released two records on the influential Cuneiform Records. The newly formed four-piece ensemble includes founders Danny Finney on saxophone and Robbie Kinter on drums/percussion with the addition of new members, George Lowe on guitar and Marc Langelier on bass.

Cuneiform Records describes Rattlemouth, “Their tunes are instantly recognizable: unusual scales and modes in the melodies that are usually handled by sax. The rhythm section keeps all of this activity firmly grounded, with quick-witted bass work and a drummer who can find the groove no matter what else is going on musically.”
