"Totemic Magic"

art6 gallery will present the exhibition “Totemic Magic” from October 1-31,
2004, featuring sculpture by Suzanna Biro of Marshall, N.C. and sculpture
and painting by Richmond artist, Frederick Chiriboga. The theme explores the
many facets oftotemic imagery with its dynamic emphasison magic.
Suzanna Biro studied and traveled in Colombia, S.A. for more than three
yearslearning weaving, pottery and painting from artists in villages
throughout the country. She also studied sculpture and drawing in New York
City. Her mixed media sculptures with added skulls and animal bones (found
in the N.C. mountains) have been her main focus for the past 4 years.
She says: “My work is meant to honor all living things in this world of
plants, rocks, water, air, animals and man.”

Frederick Chiriboga has shown many times in Richmond and nationally, and for
several years ran with his wife Birthe the Aquiles Adler Gallery on Broad
Street. He studied at Wayne State University in Detroit and spent every
summer of his childhood visiting his grandfather’s farm in the Andean
Mountains of Ecuador. Chiriboga spent time with the local carpenters and
farmers, who tilled the land with oxen and harvested wheat by hand. He also
spent time at the forge and at cobbler’s shops where he acquired a love for
leather work. He enjoys the art of the early Surrealists, Goya, Velasquez,
Duchamp --and often (he says) his own.
